Confirmed! ByteDance is undergoing a large layoff!

Hello! How can I assist you today with translating Chinese to English?

Two informed sources revealed that the Malaysian subsidiary of ByteDance, the parent company of the Chinese social media platform TikTok, has laid off more than 700 employees as the company shifts its focus towards using more artificial intelligence (AI) in content moderation.

An anonymous source stated that most of these employees were involved in the company's content moderation work. They received their dismissal notice via email on Wednesday evening (October 9th).

TikTok confirmed the layoff news in response to media inquiries on October 11, but stated that they could not disclose the specific number of affected employees in Malaysia.

As part of a broader plan to improve its auditing operations, the company expects that hundreds of people worldwide will be affected. TikTok uses a combination of automatic detection and manual review to review the content posted on the website.

According to the company's website, ByteDance has over 110,000 employees in more than 200 cities worldwide.

An insider mentioned that the technology company also plans to carry out more layoffs next month to consolidate operations in certain regions.

A TikTok spokesperson stated in a statement: "We are making these changes as part of our ongoing efforts to further enhance the content moderation global operating model."

The spokesperson stated that the company expects to invest $2 billion globally this year in trust and safety, and will continue to improve efficiency. Currently, 80% of the content that violates guidelines has been removed using automated technology.

This round of layoffs comes at a time when multinational technology companies are facing increasing regulatory pressure in Malaysia. The Malaysian government has requested social media operators to apply for operating licenses by January next year to combat cybercrime.

Earlier this year, Malaysia reported a sharp increase in harmful content on social media and urged companies including TikTok to strengthen monitoring of their platforms.
