Unprecedented in history, two chip giants collaborate for the first time to join forces against the enemy!
On October 15th local time, Lenovo held its annual technology innovation conference Tech World 2024 in Seattle, USA.
As partners of Lenovo, both Intel CEO Bob Swan and AMD CEO Lisa Su personally attended the keynote speech, and the two chip giants actually reached the first-ever cooperation on x86!
Henry Kissinger believes that on the AI stage of Lenovo, it is the best opportunity to announce the heavyweight collaboration with AMD. He said: "Some people say that the x86 era is over? I want to tell you that the rumors of 'being dead' have been greatly exaggerated. We are still alive, and doing very well. X86 is thriving."

In order to further improve the performance of the x86 architecture, Intel and AMD have initiated the "x86 Ecosystem Consulting Group."
Apart from these two giants, hardware and software manufacturers like Microsoft, Google, Lenovo, and Dell, which are involved in the x86 ecosystem, have also joined this group.
The advisory group aims to unite industry leaders to shape the future of x86 through a more unified set of instructions and architectural interfaces, promoting innovation among developers. This will enhance compatibility, predictability, and consistency among x86 products.
Of course, it is more important to counter the impact from the ARM camp represented by Apple and Qualcomm.

For over 40 years, x86 technology has been providing support for laptops, personal computers, and data center servers worldwide, becoming the preferred architecture for global data centers and PCs.
Intel and AMD are the only two major x86 architecture licensees that mass-produce new processors, which at one point led to a duopoly situation.
But the markets of the two companies have both been eroded by ARM, which has licensed its competing architecture for computing to companies such as Apple, Qualcomm, Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. The former is using it for PCs, while the latter are using it for data centers.
The rise of ARM is partly due to a provision in the contract, which states that all ARM chips can run all ARM software, regardless of who manufactures the chip.
In comparison, although products from both Intel and AMD are also cross-compatible, they are far from achieving the widespread compatibility of ARM.

It is reported that in order to achieve the above goals, the consulting group will solicit technical opinions from the x86 hardware and software community on basic functions and features.
Create key x86 architecture features and programming model consistency and compatibility, and expand to all areas (including data centers, cloud, client, edge, and embedded devices), ultimately bringing downstream advantages to customers. Expected results include:
Enhance customers' choices and compatibility between hardware and software, while accelerating their ability to benefit from new cutting-edge features.
Simplify architecture guidance to enhance software consistency and interfaces between Intel and AMD x86 products.
Support more extensive and efficient integration of new features into operating systems, frameworks, and applications.
